Ketambe - How to reach - Map

Most people arrive in Sumatra by airplane in MEDAN.
The new Airport Kuala Namu MEDAN is situated about 35 km Northeast of the city. The old Polonia Airport is closed.

If you want to go from MEDAN to Ketambe you have to go first to Kutacane. Currently this is possible by airplane and by roadtransport with an 11-seater public minibus, a 7-seater shared public taxi or a private taxi. From the city Kutacane its a 30 km ride by public transport with a mobil to Ketambe.

In July 2013 the petrol prices were increased by more than 40%. This was followed by a price increase of all transport services. Transport price information in guidebooks like the Lonely Planet are no longer valid.

The flight services on the route Medan - Kutacane - Banda Aceh depend on annual contracts. The Airline SusiAir closed a contract for 2014, starting on February. There are thre flight per week between Kutacane and Banda Aceh and two flights between Kutacane and Medan. This can change by short notice. Current schedule and prices here.

Another option is to use an aircon car (called taxi) with a driver and comfortable seats. Two companies offer a public shared taxi service, where up to 7 passengers will share the car. If you hire a private taxi, it can pick you up where ever you prefer and it will bring you all the way to Ketambe.

Guides hang arround at the guesthouses in Medan, want to bring you to Ketambe. They offer you trekking into the jungle near Ketambe. Its a good idea to do the ride to Ketambe on your own and to take a local guide over there.

If you want to reach Ketambe from BANDA ACEH its best to use an airplane, if there is one. By the inland road via Takengon and Belangkeceren it will take up to 2 full days, in a minibus with 2 interchanges.

There is also a direct night minibus which goes the east coast road and Medan. The full ride takes 22 hours.

By airplane (110 km)

The flight service depends on contracts between air carriers and the airports. Airline SusiAir has signed a contract, started to fly between Medan (Kuala Namu Airport), Kutacane and Banda Aceh since February 2014. The airfield name in Kutacane is ALAS LEUSER AIRPORT.

Currently SusiAir has three flights weekly between Banda Aceh and Kutacane and two flights between Medan and Kutacane. SusiAir is a reliable and safe airline. They use modern, but small aircrafts. The oldest airplane of their fleet is contructed in 2004. Pilots are from western countries.
For the route between Medan and Banda Aceh the plane Cessna C208b is used. It can carry a maximum of 12 passengers only. They always fly with one pilot and one co-pilot.

In Medan to/from Kuala Namu International Airport (KNIA)

Medans new airport Kuala Namu is situated 35 km Northeast of the city centre. It started to operate 25th July 2013 and is the 2nd biggest airport in Indonesia. There are international direct flights to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The airports is served by the following airlines: Garuda Indonesia, Air Asia, Mandala Air, Lion Air, Batavia Airlines, Sriwijaya Airlines, Kartika Airlines, Riau Airlines, Silk Air, Malaysia Airlines, Valuair, Firefly and Susi Air.

Kuala Namu Airport Medan   KLIA - inside

There are different transport options from/to the KNIA Medan.

The most convenient and fastest way is to use the train which connects the Medan Main Train Station besides the Merdeka Square on Jl. Balai Kota with the Airport. The ride takes 37 minutes. There are 18 trains each direction every day. Please check the schedule at this webpage: Airport Train Schedule. The one way ticket fare for adults is 80,000 IDR*.

The most common and busy transport is by DAMRI bus. Damri provides two bus shelters in Medan, one on Jl. Gatot Subroto next to Carrefour and the other at Amplas bus terminal. They go more frequent than the trains. The bus fare is 10,000 IDR from Amplas and 15,000 IDR from Jl. Gatot Subroto.

And of course there are taxis. Taking a taxi needs some 60 to 90 minutes to reach KNIA from Medan in a 35 kilometer trip, depending on traffic. The trip could be lengthened to some 120 minutes if there is a traffic jam.The taxi fare should negociated and agreed before entering the taxi. Fare can be anything between 140,000 and 200,000 IDR depends on destination/ start in Medan and on your bargaining skill.

From Kutacane Airfield to Kutacane City

The airfield Kutacane, official name is "Alas Leuser Airport", is about 20 km outside the city of Kutacane (speak: kóta-tchá-ne). From the airfield to the mainroad (Simpang Semadam) its a 15 minutes ride by becak. If a plane arrives, there is also public transport (mobil) available. On the mainroad in the village of Semadam wait for a minibus to Kutacane city. Expect to pay about 20,000 IDR* for becak and minibus. If you have direct connection in Semadam it takes about 45 minutes to reach in Kutacane. To reach Ketambe take a mobil.
Ahmad offers a shuttle service by car from the airfield Kutacane direct to Ketambe. Please ask for the price.

By road (230 km)

If you can not catch the airplane you must go all the way to Ketambe on the road. There is a relatively good asphalt road between Medan and Berastagi (the first 2 hours). Some 20 km before Kutacane and the way from Kutacane to Ketambe there is a good road too. The other parts of the road are full of holes. The minibus or the car has to go slow. Thats why the 230 km trip to Kutacane can take between 7 and 8 hours.
Now there are different kind of road transport available. There is an 11 seat public minibus, a 7 seat public shared taxi or an aircon private taxi. All these transports have own "stations" at the main road in Padang Bulan.

To Padang Bulan - Start of minibusses and public taxis

Padang Bulan is the name of the area where transport to the west of Medan starts. Along the road Jalan Jamin Ginting there are many different transport hubs from different companies.
From the area of Grand Mosque (Masjid Raya) walk to a main road (Jln. Sisingamagaraja or Jln. IR Juanda) and take the local minibus No. 41 direction Padang Bulan (it costs about 5,000 IDR*). Ask the driver to drop you off at the minibus-stand at the companies BTN or Karsima, or at the taxi companies Borneo or Adi Guna (about 30 min from Jln. IR Juanda).

By MINIBUS from Medan (Padang Bulan) to Kutacane

  Minibus - BTN
Minibus Karsima

If you arrive at Padang Bulan from Medan city you will first pass the minibus station of BTN on the left side, about 500 m further is the station of Karsima. Both have a small ticket counter and a waiting area.
The service and the ticket price is equal at both companies 60,000 IDR*. Beside the driver are 2 seats and behind are 3 rows with 3 seats each (together space for 11 passengers). Try to get a seat behind the driver for more leg space. Women should ask a front seat. Avoid the last row.
Minibusses leave when full or every hour until late afternoon. In the morning they go more frequent. There are few night busses. You can catch the minibus to Kutacane in Berastagi, if not full.
All the way you will "enjoy" loud indonesian house, pop and dangdut music. About half the way in Tigabinanga the bus will stop for rest and a meal. Try ayam gulay or rendang. If you arrive in Kutacane let drop you off at the station for local transport to Ketambe.

If you go back from Kutacane to Medan, the driver will drop you off in Medan at the place you wish, but passengers for Jln. Sisingamangaraja are the last. Sometimes it can take more than one hour cruising arround in Medan, dropping off all other passengers before you.

By PUBLIC TAXI from Medan (Padang Bulan) to Kutacane

Borneo Taxi - Address   Borneo Taxi - A Car

The companies Borneo Group Travel and Adi Guna Travel do offer a new, more comfortable, aircon public taxi service with modern cars (Toyota Kijang) between Medan and Kutacane for 120,000 IDR*. The car has leather seats, one beside the driver and 2 rows with 3 seats each behind. A maximum of 7 passengers can go, but sometimes they start even with less. This service is not as frequent as the minibus. It starts when full or usually ever 2 hours. There is one night taxi.
The "station" is also at Padang Bulan opposite the "Citra Garden" (see picture down left). Adi Guna Travel and Borneo Travel are close to each other.
The taxis will stop for rest and a meal at a restaurant (see right picture) in Kabanjahe (near Berastagi), where the food prices are quite high.

Borneo Taxi - Opposite the Office   Borneo Taxi - Restaurant

Normaly the final station is in Kutacane city. If you ask the driver, he can bring you all the way to Ketambe for an extra charge of about 70,000 IDR* for all passengers in the car (so you can share).

For the way back Ahmad (owner of Friendship Guesthouse) can arrange that the taxi will pick you up in Ketambe and bring you all the way to Medan. The driver will drop you off in Medan at the place you wish. To continue to the airport let drop you off at the city train station (stasiun kereta api ke bandara kuala namu).

By PRIVATE TAXI from Medan to Ketambe

The most comfortable choice is to hire a private taxi. It is only for you, can carry up to 7 people and it will pick you up in Medan at the place you wish to start (e. g. airport). It will go direct to Ketambe and you can stop on the way where ever you want.
If you want to book a private taxi, you can phone Ahmad or send an email. Its not that cheap as public transport, but affordable if more people share the costs.
  Private taxi

By MOBIL from Kutacane City to Ketambe

  The Mobil
Inside a Mobil

From Kutacane city to Ketambe its about 30 km. There are frequent mobil or labi labi (local transport - see pictures above), leaving from a small place near the old market. You can ask the minibus driver to drop you off at this place. Labi labi start when full. The last transport will leave from Kutacane about 17:30 WIB*. Normal price is 12,000 IDR*. The mobil stops everywhere on the way to pick up or drop off passengers. It can take up to 60 minutes to reach the final stop in Ketambe. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Friendship Guesthouse or a guesthouse of your choice.
If no more public transport available after 5:30 PM, you can hire a becak for about 70,000 IDR* for this 30 km ride.
For the same price its possible to find accomodation in Kutacane. The first mobil to Ketambe leaves in the morning at about 7:00 AM. WIB*. We can pick you up with a car in Kutacane if you arrive after the public transport is not available anymore. Please call Ahmad.
